Project description: The Canadian-Bulgarian cultural exchange, 'Est-Ouest', is an intercultural project, exploring the correlation between folklore and contemporary art creation in Canada and Bulgaria within the medium of Music. 'Est-Ouest' is a presentation of contemporary music inspired from the folk traditions of both Canada and Bulgaria, processed through the aesthetic visions of composers Svetlin Hristov (BG), Adam Vincent Clarke (CA) & Liam Elliot (CA) who, on commission of the Silakbo Ensemble, composed three new works. The folk traditions of each other’s country served as the source material and inspiration for the musical creation. The concept is to connect foreign traditions, to find how they diverge or interconnect, whether that be by melody, rhythm, dress, dance, lyrics, or instruments, and apply it to the modern classical artistic practices so as to honour the traditions explored. Within the course of this project, Bulgarian soprano Yoanna Bozhkova and Canadian composer Adam Vincent Clarke - this time as part of the ensemble and perforing on Bulgarian "Djura" bagpipes, joined the Silakbo ensemble in their exploration and development. The artists from project Est-Ouest wish to devote a significant portion of their work to educational practice, specifically through workshops and lectures with the aim to assist in the transference of knowledge to young professionals of contemporary music, and help build stable interest in both folk & contemporary music in the future. |
The project has received funding from Canada Council for the Arts.
The project was nominated for the 2019 "Musician of the Year" award by the Bulgarian National Radio
in the category "Project of the Year".
